Terrified Of Being Hurt, 8-Year-Old Ohio Boy Brings A Gun To School In His Backpack
An 8-year-old boy in Springfield, Ohio has confessed to bringing a gun to school in a last-ditch effort to protect himself against danger.
According to the Springfield News-Sun, the gun was discovered inside a student’s backpack at Simon Kenton Elementary School right before dismissal.
“As a parent and as a resident, you wonder if it’s safe to send your children to school and if they will return safely,” Nina Wiley of Springfield said to News Center 7’s James Buechele after the incident on Tuesday.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Hill has already announced that the terrified child will face discipline in accordance with Springfield City School Districts student code of conduct over the incident.
While Hill said he was very proud of teachers and administrators at the school for deescalating the situation as quickly as possible, he was still stunned to hear that the boy brought a gun to Kenton Elementary in the first place.
The gun, which was unloaded, was reportedly discovered by a teacher who had been putting homework inside the boy’s backpack.
According to the Springfield News-Sun, police were called right away and arrived to arrest the child around 3:30 p.m.
Investigators say the child in question is expected to be charged with Illegal conveyance or possession of a deadly weapon in a school safety zone.
While being interviewed by police, the 8-year-old boy reportedly confessed that he felt compelled to bring the gun to school to protect himself from another student.
Since this story was shared on Facebook, several commenters have slammed the boy’s parents and the school for failing to protect the child.
Shian Bryan commented: “Maybe Springfield City Schools should actually do something about kids being bullied!! My niece had her LIFE threatened every day at school and was being beat up by another student (3rd grade!) and I could not get SCS to do anything. I went all the way up to Chris Sanchez at the school board and nothing was ever done. Springfield News Sun you should do an article on why the schools aren’t doing anything to combat the major bullying problem they have that’s they shove under the rug!!”
“8 years old, he said he thought someone was going to hurt him........... idc whose chid this is or who the parent is I hope your my friend on facebook..... you need to be charged not this child how in tf do you allow your child to get a gun. I check my 6 year olds bag every morning, additionally she dont even know where the guns are. Springfield city police dept shame on you for not holding the parent liable. Smh,” Sydney Jeffrey added.
Rhonda Jo Rouch Gram also wrote: “Sadly this is the mentality of the world today.."I am just going to shoot you"..what do you expect nowadays? Kids bully others to the point of either killing the bully or themselves..the parents keeping guns where children can get to them..parenting failure is at an all time high and tolerance for others is non-existent. So they have the kid in "custody" that brought the gun.. what about the one he was going to shoot? Are they going to ask that kid what they were doing to make this kid snap?”
